Precision 1-3 Axis Tip-Tilt Stages

piezosystem tip tilt stages

Piezo tip-tilt stages are designed to move a mirror or other components with precision in 1 to 3 axes.  The stages offer sub-µrad resolutions and tilting from 1 mrad to ±22 mrad.

Fast steering mirrors (FSMs) are ideal for dynamic applications and can accept multiple mirror sizes. Strain gauge feedback systems are available for the highest resolution and long-term stability.

The NEW PSH 20/2 and 35/2 stages are space-qualified, and ready to be utilized in challenging environments. The proven performance criteria established by ESA make the PSH series an excellent choice not only for O-ISL, but also in critical production environments, such as those found in semiconductor manufacturing.

Piezo tip-tilt stages are often used for high-speed scanning, vibration control, laser beam steering, and even eye tracking.

NEW  2-Axis Solutions, PSH 20/2, and PSH 35/2

These two New tip-tilt precision stages are designed to deliver high dynamics with resonant frequencies of up to 2 kHz.  These stages are ideal for beam steering in challenging environments.  Highlights include:

  • Tilting axes in perpendicular orientation
  • Designed for mirrors with a maximum diameter of 32 mm
  • Up to 36 mrad closed-loop tilting range with 1 µrad resolution
  • Up to 1.4 kHz resonant frequency with a 0.7” mirror

The PSH 20/2 is optimized for rapid tilt applications with a lower capacitance and a reduced energy consumption. The PSH 35/2 offers a longer stroke and a broader temperature range which is ideal for achieving the highest precision in challenging environments. Open and close-loop versions are available for both models.

Developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) for the SQATTS (Space Qualified Tilting Systems) project, the PSH 20/2 and PSH 35/2 systems have successfully met the rigorous standards for space qualification.

PHS 1-Axis Tip-Tilt Stages from Piezosystem Jena

1-Axis Tip-Tilt Stage, Model PSH 4/1

Features include:

  • Smallest piezo scanners available at just 20 grams and 20 mm tall
  • High resonant frequency of 6.5 kHz
  • Nearly unlimited resolution in the sub-nm range
  • Easy mirror mounting

The PSH 4/1 was developed as an ultra fast scanning system for kHz frequencies. The miniature system is based on two active actuators. It provides ±2 mrad of tilting – total tilting of up to 4 mrad. Because of the internal pre-load, the system shows a very short settling time and the resonant frequency is greater than 6.5 kHz when unloaded. The piezo mirror tilting and scanning platforms PSH 4/1 is available in cryogenic and vacuum versions. Optical components such as mirrors can be mounted directly on top of the system plate.

2-Axis Tip Tilt Stages from Piezosystem Jena

2-Axis Tip-Tilt Stage, Model PSH 25

  • Large displacements of up to 44 mrad
  • Resolution is sub-µrad
  • Strain gauge position feedback models are available
  • Systems for multiple mirror sizes

The PSH 25 serves the fast and precise positioning of optical components. Mirrors or prisms can be positioned in the mrad range at up to several kilohertz. This tip-tilt steering mirror platform is characterized by the positioning of optical components in two axes. A tilting range of up to ±20 mrad (open loop) / ±16 mrad (closed loop) is available. Another key feature is the easy exchange of different optical components.

3-Axis Tip-Tilt Stages from Piezosystem Jena

3-Axis Tip-Tilt Stages – 4 Models PSH 1z-4z

  • Tilting angle of 1 to 4 mrad
  • Resonant frequency is 2700 to 5800 Hz
  • Sub- µrad resolution
  • For mirrors up to 50 mm in diameter
  • Z-axis can be used to adjust the focal point of the tip-tilt motion

The PSH 1z, PSH 2z, PSH 3z and PSH 4z mirror tilting stages each consists of three active piezoelectric actuators. These actuators provide tip and tilt motion to the top plate, and when used together they provide a piston motion in the Z axis up to 8 μm.

Their construction is temperature compensated so that changes in environmental temperature do not affect the tilting angle. The tilting mirror mounts are pre-loaded for dynamic applications.

Recommended Controllers for 1 to 3 Axis Tip-Tilt Stages

1-channel controller NV200D from Piezosystem Jena

For 1-Axis Stages the NV200D controller is recommended.  The NV200D controller offers:
