Microscopy Stages

Microscopy Stages CSM from JAT

While objective positioners precisely move an objective or lens in the Z-axis, a microscopy stage moves an entire sample or an object for more precise viewing.  These stages can be solid for top-down viewing only, or there are aperture stages so the viewing and lighting can be conducted from the top or the bottom.  Motion is in 1 to 3 axes.

Options include stages that offer large apertures, nanometer resolution, accurate positioning within milliseconds, and very high repeatability.

Example Models:

2-axis stage nanoSXY 120

2-Axis nanoSXY 120 Stages

This stage combines the high accuracy and speed of a piezo positioning system with a special actuating design for long travel motion.

  • Travel ranges of 120/100 µm (open-loop/closed-loop)
  • Central aperture of 12.5 mm diameter
  • Sub-nm resolution
  • High z-axis stiffness
  • Excellent guidance accuracy

The ultra flat design of this stage and the ability to easily combine it with an XY scanning system, makes the system especially useful for a wide variety of applications.

Based on the unique bi-directional actuating nanoX design, the nanoSXY 120 can move high load masses with a resolution of 0.25 nm. The design also guarantees excellent guidance accuracy without parasitic motion and improves the settling time actively. The stage can be equipped with a high-resolution feedback system (CAP) for closed-loop control.

Fields of application include high resolution metrology, X and XY scanning, and dynamic positioning. The stages are also available in cryogenic and vacuum versions.

3-axis stage TRITOR 102 from Piezosystem Jena

3-Axis TRITOR Stages

TRITOR® nanopositioners are extremely compact.  Parallel motion is achieved without mechanical play due to the system’s rigid design. As an option, integrated position control systems for overcoming the effect of hysteresis are available.

  • Motion ranges from 9 to 400 µm
  • Highest positioning resolution
  • Typical applications include AFM and SFM microscopy, fiber alignment, beam steering, and semiconductor manufacturing

These piezo stages can be easily combined with other mechanical positioning systems, and they are well suited for various applications reaching from optical research to OEM systems.

TRITOR® elements consist of actuators integrated in a housing with internal lever transmission. Since the lever mechanism works in both directions, forces between the housing and top plate need to be avoided, as they could damage the stage. Some models contain an aperture (pictured).

These multi-axis positioning stages are attached by using two diagonal holes.

5-axis stage PENTOR model from Piezosystem Jena

5-Axis PENTOR Stages

Optical stages often require an open aperture for passing light through. The PENTOR translation and tilting stages were developed with these features in mind.

  • Combination of a three-axis translation system and a two-axis tilting system
  • Translation each axis: Up to 100 µm
  • Center aperture with a 17 mm diameter
  • Tilt of ±2 mrad in each direction
  • Vacuum and low temperature models are available

Flexure hinges for the three translation axes guarantee the highest degree of parallelism over the travel range of this stage. Each axis has an integrated mechanical preload, making the 5-axis PENTOR stages, very well suited for dynamic applications. The tilting is designed for plus-minus tilting.

The construction is temperature compensated so that changes in the surrounding temperature do not affect the tilting angle.

The primary components constructed with solid state flexure hinges are made from stainless steel. The bottom and top plates are made from black anodized aluminum.

As an option, the 5-axis PENTOR stages can be outfitted with an integrated strain gauge measurement system.
